You might already know, we are installing a community battery in Sunshine. It will be the first community battery installed by Brimbank Council! We’re calling it the Sunshine Community Battery.

Community batteries help to make the power network more resilient by:

  • soaking up excess local rooftop solar power
  • releasing the power back to the grid when electricity demand is high

By doing this, batteries provide network support and reduce power surges.

Community batteries maximise the amount of rooftop solar which can be installed on the local power network and used every day.

The community battery will look like a large stainless steel power transformer box and sit on a concrete plinth. The unit is about the size of a small car. We plan to decorate it with artwork to complement the surrounding park. The artwork will also help to deter vandalism.

The Sunshine Community Battery will be placed in Gresham Way Reserve.

Choosing a location factored in several key considerations:

  1. It needed to be placed on Council owned land so it could be managed by Council.
  2. The power network location was also important, with the power lines in Gresham Way Reserve appropriate because they have an adequate power capacity.
  3. There is also a large uptake of residential rooftop solar on this low voltage network, meaning the battery can make the most of locally generated renewable energy and more houses will also be able to connect to solar then they otherwise would have.

Hi Team, Thank you for the choice of really nice artworks. Ours is way better than Brunswick Community Battery which looks like a graffiti!

Rainbow lorikeets are increasingly becoming a pest by inhibiting nesting and feeding of other native birds. I would avoid.
