Transforming a former traffic island into a pocket park
In May 2022, Brimbank Council officially opened Glengala Pocket Park in Sunshine West.
The park was created on the site of a former traffic island at the intersection of Glengala Road and Gum Street as a cool, green, safe and usable space for the community to enjoy.
The park includes:
- A playful seating wall
- A ‘lizard lounge’ with nature play
- A large shelter and picnic table
- Lawn, garden beds, and trees
- Bike racks and a bin
- Mosaic artworks and sculpture created in collaboration with local school children
- Drinking fountain.
The $440,000 project was funded by the Victorian Government through the Local Parks Program and Brimbank City Council and is part of Council's ongoing commitment to implement Brimbank's Creating Better Parks Policy and Plan.

Local artist, Debbie Qadri, made the mosaic artworks and sculpture at Glengala Pocket Park.
The clay tiles were been decorated at a series of artist-led workshops by students from three local schools:
- Sunshine Heights Primary School
- Sunshine College
- Marian College.
Mosaic work on the pavers was created by parents and teachers of Sunshine Heights Primary school in workshops with the artist.
The theme for workshops was a sense of place and belonging within the community. The students explored the importance of their local community, their living place/space, and the role of public open space in their sense of place and belonging in their designs.
