Registrar of Geographic Names gave notice in the Gazette on 15 December 2022.

Tong Avenue is now the legal name for this section of road.

The voting poll results showed 58% of votes were not in favour of Carruthers Way. We contacted the affected residents to vote on an alternative name. Results showed Tong Avenue as the preferred street name.

We t lodged the new name with the Registrar, and affected residents notified on 28 October 2022.

Once the Registrar gazettes the new street name we will notify:

• Affected residents
• organisations
• general community.

We are renaming the section of Ashton Avenue, St Albans between Main Road East and Clarke Avenue. We propose the name Carruthers Way.

The current street numbering does not follow the Australian & New Zealand Addressing Standards.

The standards say street numbers must not:

• risk public and operational safety for emergency response
• cause confusion for transport, communication and mail services.

The renaming will resolve this and allow for future developments in this area.

The name Carruthers is in recognition of Sister Carruthers. She worked at Sunshine Harvester Works as a nurse from 1946-1955. And established St Andrew’s Private Hospital in Sunshine.

Council has been unable to locate existing family members for permission to use the name. We ask for consent from the family or request family contact details from the community.
