Project Overview
As part of broader improvement works, a new kindergarten is being constructed within Stevens Reserve. The existing building is ageing and at the end of its life. The new facility will offer a modern, high-quality learning environment for local children.
The new building will be larger and allow more children to attend for longer hours. The new facility will have two Kindergarten rooms, each room will support up to 33 places, compared to 29 in the current single-room facility.
Through the Best Start, Best Life reform, kindergarten hours for four-year-olds will increase from 15 to 30 hours per week by 2036, with many families accessing extra hours from 2028.
Once the new kindergarten is complete and operational, the existing kindergarten building will be demolished. In its place, we will reinstate and transform the space into a vibrant neighbourhood park with a new local playground.
The revitalised Stevens Reserve will offer a welcoming and inclusive environment for the community, featuring:
- A small playground with toddler and junior play equipment
- A combination unit and swings
- Seating located near the play areas for parents and carers.
- Open grassed areas for informal play and physical activity
- High canopy shade trees and non-irrigated lawn areas
- Pathways connecting key features within the reserve.
These works aim to enhance local liveability by delivering high-quality, accessible green spaces where families can play, relax, and connect with nature.

We are moving Stevens Reserve to be located on the current St Albans West Kindergarten site, once the new kindergarten has been built on the current Stevens Reserve site.
Playground Design
In line with Council’s commitment to sustainability, several existing elements from the current preschool and park will be retained and reused including the junior play unit, shade structures, pathways, bike rails, fencing, and mature trees.
